Rec Fest 2008
The Norwich North Stars took part in the National Recreational Ice Hockey tournament in Sheffield 2008 this weekend and became Consolidation Cup Champions.
Leaving Norwich at 4.00pm on Friday afternoon the team were psyched and ready for some full contact ice hockey. As a new team in the recreational leagues Norwich were looking for experience we did not expect any wins let alone any trophies.
Bright and early on Saturday morning our first game of the tournament was against the Sheffield Stallions, which started slowly as there was no warm up, we were all trying as hard as we could to get into the game. The first shot on goal by Mike Ager was unsuccessful against the Stallions highly experience net minder and at this point Stallions were dominating the game leading 2-0. Norwich’s defence was working hard and keeping the hard attacking Stallions back but despite the great efforts of the defence and some amazing saves by goalie Nick Simoes Norwich lost 4-0
Not too disheartened by the loss the team were still in high spirits and enjoying the experience. Now it was our turn to play the Solihull Wolves.
After being out played and defeated in the earlier game Norwich needed to step up their performance against this experienced team, and that is exactly what we did. Norwich were dominating the Wolves with numerous of unsuccessful shots on goal after a fast paced and hard fought game Norwich North Stars finished of with a 0-0 draw.
Now playing the Peterborough Eagles starting off with a quick goal from Mike Ager this shocked the Eagles who thought it was going to be an easy ride, the North Stars were starting to gel together and the results were being seen.
Eagles had quite a few good shots on goal all being blocked by some great saves from net minder Mark Daniels. After some heavy full contact checking the team were really in for the win. After Mike Ager receiving a match ban the Eagles were successful in sinking their first goal. With our star centre off the ice the Eagles now had an opening but the North Stars held strong. In the last few seconds of the game the game the Eagles managed to sink a final goal to win 2-1
Now the Norwich North Stars, hungry for success, determined and feeling good were up against the team tipped to win the tournament the Kingston Cobras.
Yet again the Cobras knowing us as the underdogs thought they were in for an easy ride with some ex-professional players on their team, they soon realized they were wrong despite loosing Mike Collins due to suspected fractured ribs the North Stars stayed strong. Kingston Cobras kept the pressure on net minder Nick Simoes but to no avail, North Stars defence keeping strong as they have most of this tournament and the forwards making some great breakouts into the Cobra’s zone.
This was by far the Norwich North Stars best performance yet.
A great pass from Liam Maguire to forward Azlan Raj then sees Azlan out skate the Kingston defence and takes a great wrist shot into the back of the net. Norwich now leading 1-0 to the Cobra’s who then came back and level the score 1-1 this fast becoming a great game.
The crown were now starting to support the underdogs and Kingston pull into the lead with two more goals making it 3-1 to Kingston cobras. Norwich North Stars Mike Ager assisted by Steven Flanagan, shots into the back of the net making the score 3-2. 20 seconds on the clock and Norwich pulling the net minder in favour of another forward to go for the draw but the Cobras break out with the puck towards an open goal, determined not to loose 4-2 Norwich’s forward Steven Flanagan skates back fast and takes a dive into the goal mouth knocking the puck off course in the last second as the whistle is blown! After a very intense game Cobras win 3-2 and the North Stars after their best game yet are ready for day two.
Another early morning for the North Stars sees us up against the Medway Madness, another experienced team from London. After our out standing performance against the Kingston Cobra’s the Norwich North Stars were ready for more.
From face off Norwich were skating fast, checking hard and with the return of Mike Collins to the ice we were ready. The first goal was from Norwich’s Mike Ager assisted by captain Alex Bailey and Steven Flanagan.
Again the North Stars were dominating the Medway Madness goal line. Yet another power play goal by Mike Ager this time assisted by Rick Sheppard and Sebastian Peyer with just minutes left on the clock Norwich North Stars win 2-0
A return game against the Peterborough Phoenix who beat the north stars 16-0 about 6 months ago in a friendly event proved more interesting. With the Phoenix spending more time in the penalty box than on the ice. Phoenix was playing hard and rough, but this only spurred the North Stars on more. Playing faster and harder than ever the Norwich North Stars were on form. And the Phoenix were about to get what they were giving and more.
Another goal by Mike Ager assisted by Andy Boyle put the Norwich Stars 1-0 up. After some intense checking, skating and a lot of penalties by the Phoenix Mike Ager gets another un-assisted goal taking the stars to a 2-0 win.
Our second game in this tournament against the Solihull Wolves but this time the Norwich North Stars were not content with a draw, we wanted the win.
It was not the best of starts and the Wolves were dominating our goal line with a lot of shots on the net minder all saved by Mark Daniels. The North Stars turn up the heat and turn the game around on the wolves with plenty of shots on goal. Sebastian Peyer being involved in a fight on the ice left the north stars angry and even more hungry for the win.
North Stars forward Mike Ager skated aggressively and put another shot into the back of the Wolves goal, assisted by Zdenik Valis.
Jason Moore taking a slap shot to the side of the kneecap puts him out for the rest of the tournament.
In a desperate attempt to equalize the score the Wolves pulled their net minder with 8 seconds left and Zdenik Valis takes this opportunity to put another in the back of the net giving Norwich North Stars a 2-0 win.
The final game of the tournament was against the Oxford Bulls. The Norwich North Stars went out for the win but had started to tire. During another intense game the Stars were all working as a team and playing to win. The Bulls put a great slap shot in the top corner and the North Stars went 1-0 down. The stars defence worked hard and stopped any more goals but the final score was a 1-0 loss for Norwich.
As the Stars had equalled the Oxford Bulls in points the results went on goals scored and the Norwich North Stars won by one goal making us the National Recreational Ice Hockey Consolation Cup Champions 2008.
Also Mike Ager received; Forward of the tournament for his part in helping the Norwich North Stars to their victory. Well done to everyone who played.
Steve Flanagan
